Human Flourishing Program Staff in the Harvard Crimson on Cultivating Wisdom in Higher Education

Prof. Tyler VanderWeele, director of the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University, and Brendan Case, associate director, published an op-ed in the Harvard Crimson entitled, “What College Rankings Are Missing.” In the article, Vanderweele and Case point out that prominent college ranking lists like that released annually by the U.S. News and World Report focus on graduation and hiring rates and debt levels for graduates in creating their rankings, while neglecting considerations like moral formation, capacity for leadership, and intellectual maturity. Vanderweele and Case acknowledge the difficulties of quantifying these things, and suggest some practical ways for rankings reports to get a more well-rounded picture of the educational quality of various universities.
