2025 AASL Barry Prize Winners

Washington DC – At its annual investiture ceremony in Washington DC, the American Academy of Sciences & Letters (AASL) awarded ten Barry Prizes for Distinguished Intellectual Achievement to scholars of distinction in their fields. The Barry Prize is the Academy’s premier recognition of excellence in scholarship. AASL is a Foundation for Excellence in Higher Education (FEHE grantee).

In addition, Dr. Paul McHugh (Associate Director of the Paul McHugh Program for Human Flourishing at Johns Hopkins University) was awarded the Robert J. Zimmer Medal for Intellectual Freedom at the ceremony.

The Barry Prize is a prestigious annual award that honors scholars whose work has made outstanding contributions to humanity’s knowledge, appreciation, and cultivation of the good, the true, and the beautiful.

The 2025 awardees are:

Danielle Allen, Harvard University (Political Philosophy)

Richard Binzel, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Astronomy)

Janet Box-Steffensmeier, Ohio State University (Political Science)

Charles Butterworth, University of Maryland (Philosophy)

Sylvester Gates, University of Maryland (Physics)

Anthony Grafton, Princeton University (History)

Philip Hamburger, Columbia University (Law)

Leon Kass, University of Chicago (Social Thought)

Joseph Weiler, New York University (Law)

David Relman, Stanford University (Medicine)

Recipients are nominated by the members of the Academy and appointed by the board of directors. Winners of the Barry Prize receive a cash award and also become members of the Academy.
